Beyond Service
Our facilities provides a range of services to support individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health needs, or other special needs. We offer a supportive and nurturing environment that goes beyond basic care, and provides residents with the tools and skills they need to live their lives to the fullest.
Supporting Normalization
It is the policy of MSLMCorp to support normalization. We help residents maintain an age-appropriate, attractive, and well-groomed appearance. We maintain the appearance of the facility similar or better than that of neighboring homes. We sponsor activities within a typical daily schedule that are integrated and age-appropriate. For example, residents are encouraged to participate in shopping, attending movies or a craft fair after work or on weekends. Also when using community resources residents do so individually or in small groups.
Supporting Dignity & Respect
It is the policy of MSLMCorp that all persons are entitled to respectful treatment. Staff interactions display mutual respect with consumers. There are no artificial boundaries between the staff areas, schedules, menus or dining rooms and those of the residents. Everyone is treated with dignity. Residents and staff all are addressed by first name to promote a sense of fam-ilv or friendship. Staff respect each person’s need for privacy especially if assisting with personal hygiene. Residents receive training in personal privacy and respecting the rights of housemates, also. Staff always knock and ask permission prior to entering a resident’s room. Residents are taught to shut doors to bathrooms and bedrooms as needed. Residents are afforded privacy with visitors, phone calls, and mail.
Supporting Diversity and Decision-making
It is the policy of MSLMCorp to respect individual differences and individual choice. MSLMCorp fosters an environment of tolerance and support among staff and residents. Residents are assisted in pursuing any religious activities they choose i.e. attending religious services at a church or temple, practicing a religious or cultural tradition at home. Staff will assist in purchasing items the resident may need to practice their faith i.e. Rosary, Bible, Torah, or special food. We also encourage and assist residents to celebrate or practice holidays and special occasions publicly with others.
We encourage decision-making both informally and in a structured training manner. All programming decisions are made in a person-centered manner and consider the resident’s and family’s priorities. Residents are included in the assessment process; their values and desires are taken into consideration with Individual Service Plans. Our services and interventions are individualized. MSLMCorp provides an environment in which residents know they are listened to and their communication can cause changes.
Supporting Positive Relationships
We believe that positive relationships are the cornerstone to normalization and a primary component of effective behavior services. MSLMCorp supports residents develop mutual and rewarding relationships with others. We see adult relationships as a set of concentric circles. The center symbolizes the relationship one has with those who share your home. The surrounding circle includes family, friends and romantic partners. The outer most circle being the general community.
We encourage special friendships between residents and staff based on interest, culture, and personality. This motivates staff to be out with residents and act as a bridge to developing community support or ‘Circle of Support.’ MSLMCorp involves residents’ families as much as possible. The program maintains an “Open Door” policy and encourages family members to drop by for dinner and special occasions. At least one time a year we sponsor a facility activity and invite the resident’s family and friends to join us. With resident permission, we include families in our planning meetings and send them any written reports we have developed. Our consultants will be available to family members regarding family relationship or difficulties that impinge on a resident’s behavioral progress.
Supporting Community Participation
It is the policy of MSLMCorp to emphasize community-based training. We have found the community is not only a training site but for most residents a strong motivator. Our structured outings include functional and recreational activities.
Functional outings might include banking, shopping, using a beauty shop or voting. Leisure and recreational outings include movies, concerts, eating at a restaurant, picnics, walks in the neighborhood, trips to parks, crafts fairs, a flea market, museums, a volunteer experience or swimming at the local community recreation center. Most residents will participate in a community integration activity at least 2 times per week depending on their interests, energy and daily schedule. The program provides for choice of activities. We have included a sample activity schedule to illustrate how we incorporate community use into daily life at Pennsylvania Care Home.
